We continue with our comparisons of graphics chips and this time in the spotlight come two budget options both manufactured by NVIDIA – GeForce MX130 and GeForce GTX 1050 (2GB GDDR5).

For starters, NVIDIA GeForce MX130 is a budget-friendly solution that can be found in many new ultra-portable or budget-mainstream laptops featuring a total of 384 shader cores, 24 TMUs, and 8 ROPs. Built upon a 28 nm process, the graphics card is based on the Maxwell architecture and supports DirectX 12.0. Furthermore, it relies on 2,048 MB GDDR5 memory connected using a 64-bit memory bus. NVIDIA GeForce MX130 is operating at a base clock speed of 1122 MHz reaching up to 1242 MHz. Additionally, the TDP is rated at 30W.

A quick look through the specs sheet of its rival – the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 is part of the Pascal lineup of GPUs with a total of 640 shader (CUDA) cores. Manufactured through a Samsung-made FinFET 14nm process, the GPU runs at base frequencies of 1354 MHz, while the turbo speeds can reach 1493 MHz. In addition, it is equipped with 2GB of GDDR5 memory on a 128-bit interface. On top of that, GeForce GTX 1050 supports quite a few essential features such as DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0b, HDR, improved H.265 encoding, and decoding. As for the TDP, it is rated at around 40-50W.

The charts above show an approximate comparison between the two GPUs that can be found in Acer Aspire 5 and ASUS VivoBook Pro 17 N705 respectively. Judging by the results from our benchmark tests, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 outperforms the MX130 with the astonishing 153% when it comes to the Fire Strike (Graphics) benchmark. It also delivers significantly better performance in our Unigine Heaven 3.0 and 4.0 tests (36-149% better). On top of all this, GeForce GTX 1050 surpasses its opponent with around 83% as far as the Unigine Superposition benchmark is concerned.

Conclusion

We can conclude that the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 turns out to be a far better choice compared to its opponent given the huge difference in their benchmark results.
