Last time we checked how Intel Core i5-8300H stacks up against the ULV Intel Core i5-8250U. Today, you should prepare for another epic battle between the entry-level i5-8300H chip and the top-shelf Intel Core i7-7700HQ.

Specs overview

For starters, let’s take a closer look at the entry-level Intel Core i5-8300H, which is based on the 8th gen Coffee Lake-H architecture. Built through a 14nm process, the chip features a total of 4 cores and can execute up to 8 threads simultaneously thanks to the Hyper-Threading technology. On top of that, Intel Core i5-8300H operates at a base frequency of 2.30 GHz and can go up to 4.00 GHz in Turbo mode. The specs sheet is complemented by 8MB of L3 Cache, support for up to 2666 MHz dual-channel DDR4 memory controller with a maximum capacity of 64GB, as well as 45W TDP including the iGPU which in this case is the Intel UHD Graphics 630 with a base clock speed of 300MHz and a turbo boost frequency of 1.15 GHz.

Now let’s turn our heads to its rival. Intel Core i7-7700HQ is a high-end processor part of the 7th gen Kaby Lake architecture. Manufactured through a 14nm node, the chip adopts the 4/8 core/thread count using the HyperThreading technology. In addition, the speeds vary in the 2.80 – 3.80 GHz range and the TDP is rated at 45W. The specs sheet is complemented by 6MB last level cache, as well as a dual-channel memory controller that supports DDR4-2400, LPDDR3-2133, and DDR3L-1600. Furthermore, the integrated GPU here is again the Intel HD Graphics 630 clocked at 300-1100 MHz.

You can check out the full specs of the Intel Core i5-8300H and the Intel Core i7-7700HQ.

Benchmarks

  • 3D Rendering : Results are from the Cinebench 15 CPU test (the higher the score, the better)

Intel Core i5-8300H – Acer Nitro 5 AN515-52

PERFORMANCE : 857.00

Intel Core i7-7700HQ – HP Omen 17 (2017)

PERFORMANCE : 723 (-9.5%)

  • Adobe Photoshop : Results are from our Photoshop benchmark test (the lower the score, the better)

Intel Core i5-8300H – Acer Nitro 5 AN515-52

PERFORMANCE : 8.80

Intel Core i7-7700HQ – HP Omen 17 (2017)

PERFORMANCE : 10.75 (+1.3%)

  • Raw performance : Results are from the Fritz chess benchmark (the higher the score, the better)

Intel Core i5-8300H – Acer Nitro 5 AN515-52

PERFORMANCE : 15661.00

Intel Core i7-7700HQ – HP Omen 17 (2017)

PERFORMANCE : 13350 (-4.2%)

For the purposes of this juxtaposition, we have chosen to compare the performance of the two chips found in Acer Nitro 5 AN515-52 and HP Omen 17 (2017) respectively. Looking at the charts above, Intel Core i5-8300H shows around 19% better results when it comes to 3D rendering (tested with Cinebench 15). Moreover, the i5 chip is 22% faster in the Adobe Photoshop test. On top of that, Intel Core i5-8300H once again outperforms Intel Core i7-7700HQ with 17% in our raw synthetic benchmarks (tested with Fritz).

Conclusion

To sum things up, given the fact that Intel Core i5-8300H smashes its opponent in all 3/3 benchmark tests it has every right to be pronounced the winner of today’s comparison.
